Capt. Chris Donato kicks off his 2020 fishing season aboard Benchmark, his 37-foot Merritt based in Kona, with an epic day, going four for five on blue marlin for his charter clients. Donato based his strategy on finding a southerly current in what he considers inshore waters off Hawaii—200 to 500 fathoms!—where he found consistent fishing. The team also marked a much larger fish throughout the day, so he surmises that it may be a spawning aggregation. Much larger fish have been caught in the spring so this may be just the first part of a red-hot season in Hawaii. Stay tuned!
