The sportfishing community has recently suffered an irreplaceable loss with the passing of two influential figures: Gail Morchower and Capt. David Salazar. Morchower, a passionate curator and librarian at the IGFA’s E.K. Harry Library of Fishes, dedicated over three decades to preserving the history of angling. Her work shaped the future of sportfishing research and education. Salazar, a beloved captain and owner of Casa Vieja Lodge, was known for his boundless energy and commitment to both the sport and his family. Together with his wife, Kristen, Salazar built a legacy that continues to inspire anglers worldwide. Both will be deeply missed.

Gail Morchower

Gail Morchower, longtime librarian and beloved curator of the IGFA’s E.K. Harry Library of Fishes, passed away on November 26, 2024, leaving a profound legacy in recreational angling. Beginning her journey with the International Game Fish Association (IGFA) in 1991, Morchower transformed its collection into the world’s largest fishing library, preserving nearly 15,000 books, thousands of historical records and artifacts, and curating captivating exhibits at the IGFA’s Fishing Hall of Fame. An invaluable resource to outdoor writers and angling historians, Morchower assisted countless authors in their pursuit of information on sport fishing. A vibrant spirit, Morchower also danced for the Miami Heat Golden Oldies and is survived by her beloved French bulldog, Apollo. Morchower’s enduring dedication has helped ensure angling history will continue to inspire future generations.

Capt. David Salazar, a celebrated figure in sport fishing, passed away suddenly on December 3, 2024. Known for his vivacious personality and contagious energy, Salazar grew up in Miami, Florida, learning to fish from his father and developing a passion for chasing billfish. His career took him around the world in pursuit of world’s most treasured game fish, before he and his wife, Kristen, realized their shared dream of running Casa Vieja Lodge and raising a family in Guatemala. Together, they created a world-renowned destination for fishing enthusiasts and a haven of camaraderie, family, and sport fishing. Salazar’s legacy lives on in Kristen, their four daughters, and the countless lives he touched.
