Let's face it: We reach for our small, 3-inch gape stick gaff a lot more than we rush to break out the flyers. Just about every wahoo, tuna and dorado that you hook has a date with the stainless-steel hook, so it's a good idea to store this heavily used, dangerous tool in a safe manner.

While wandering the aisle at the hardware store recently, a product caught my eye that would make a perfect cover for any 3-inch gaff head. The extension ladder covers, made by Werner, are made from a blue, rubberlike material. They stretch over my small gaffs and stay in place just fine — they won't come off until you want them to.
