Sport Fishing seeks new editor
Mon, Jun 16, 2008

Sport Fishing magazine is seeking to fill the position of editor. This is a full-time, in-house position for one of the world's leading, most respected publications dedicated to saltwater angling. It is truly one of those ultimate dream jobs involving opportunities to travel and be involved in the sport, while also utilizing a range of skills as an integral part of a dynamic national magazine. For the right person, the opportunity offers an amazing set of unique challenges and satisfactions. Start date is no later than October 1.

RESPONSIBILITIES

The editor will:

Work closely with the editor in chief and assist in carrying out a shared vision of the title.

Assume responsibility for one to three features/issue, writing some and editing others, and overseeing all aspects of the editorial process for these from start to finish -- including assigning some features to contributors; ensuring great images; working with art director on maps, charts; assigning illustrations to artist; reviewing initial layouts; writing captions; coordinating any website tie-ins; etc.

Assume responsibility for departments/columns as necessary, generally following the process described above.

Peer-review designated features and departments.

Be able/willing to travel for necessary experience/background (via fishing) for features as well as to take high-quality photography for a specific use and, always, for stock files.

Assist in prufing and approving layouts during production.

Assist in planning editorial direction and content

Work with SF's web team and the managing editor to help create/execute opportunities for additional website synergy with print.

Attend various boat and trade shows during the year as well as dealer meetings and other industry/media events as needed.

Assume responsibility for day-to-day ops and oversight during production if EIC must be away.

REQUIREMENTS/QUALIFICATIONS

Relocation to central Florida (Bonnier's main offices are in Winter Park.)

Magazine experience — prefer full-time staff on a national or regional publication.

Highly skilled as a writer/editor who understands needs of a national/international audience, and as a professional photographer.

Appropriate academic background (typically journalism/communications but this may vary);

Experience/knowledge of the sport — and please note that we're about SALTwater fishing (not freshwater). Prefer years of both deep and broad experience, in terms of:

- geography (familiar with/fished around most of N/Ctrl America, at the least);

- types of fishing (inshore, nearshore, and particularly offshore) and fishes, and with various tackle;

- the industry (in terms of products and major players -- tackle, boats/boating, electronics, tournaments);

- the issues (conservation, management, access, etc.).

Computer savvy (familiar with mac and pc platforms and editorial/design programs/software including indesign and quark); familiarity with web maintenance useful.

Personal attributes: reliable, organized and efficient, consummately professional, one who takes pride in his/her work, and always a team player.
