By John N. Felsher
Sun, May 25, 2008

John Fisher of New Smyrna Beach and Richard Farnan of Edgewater took top honors in the 6th annual New Smyrna Beach Redfish and Trout Challenge, presented by Hells Bay Boats Sunday at Riverside Park.

The pair caught a total of 51.42 pounds. Each day of the two-day event, a team could weigh in two redfish and two speckled trout. Fisher and Farnan scored most of their weight with redfish, placing second in the spot-tail category with a two-day total of 27.98 pounds.

Jeremy Davis of Edgewater and Chad McCormick of New Smyrna Beach teamed up for a second-place finish with 48.58 pounds. The team of William Brown and Davey Brown of Edgewater, plus Eugene Futch of New Smyrna Beach took third overall with 42.30 pounds.

James Doolin of Edgewater teamed with Kenneth Bohannon of New Smyrna Beach to win the redfish competition with 25.44 pounds. Bill and Bob Fisher, both of Port Orange won the trout event with a two-day take weighing 28.92 pounds.
Deanna Freeburn of Edgewater won the top award for the women by catching a 6.82-pound speckled trout. Caroline Kelley of Winter Park caught a 6.46-pound redfish to take bragging rights for junior anglers.

In the fly category, Scott MacCalla of Debary enticed a spot-tail weighing 6.22 pounds. No anglers entered any trout caught on fly tackle.

The tournament capped three days of FishStock 2008 festivities. Hosted by Sport Fishing, Marlin and Fly Fishing in Salt Water magazines, the 127-boat inshore event paid out about $20,000 in cash and prizes. Held Friday and Saturday, the 32nd annual New Smyrna/Daytona Beach Striker offshore tournament, presented by Trophy Boats, paid out more than $100,000 in cash and prizes to the 93 teams participating.

FishStock 2008 also included a free boat show at Riverside Park in New Smyrna Beach. Spectators waiting to see the big ones could view the latest model boats and exhibits of art, fishing tackle, marine accessories and much more. Young anglers took home about 300 new fishing rod-and-reel combinations as part of the KidStock activities.
