While most boats heading offshore bring an emergency positioning radiobeacon (EPIRB) along for safety, many crews don't carry one due to the initial cost. Spending $400, $500 or even $1,000 for a unit made some anglers bank on a good VHF or even cell phone coverage, but safety now comes with a lower price tag. With just an initial price of under $170, the SPOT Satellite Messenger from Globalstar's subsidiary, SPOT Inc., gives wide-ranging anglers a variety of options for keeping in touch, whether sending text or e-mail messages to friends, family or emergency responders.
This rugged floating unit is both waterproof and shockproof, built to withstand a variety of hostile environmental conditions. SPOT uses Globalstar's communications and GPS satellite networks to communicate independently of cell coverage worldwide. Modes include Alert 9-1-1, which contacts emergency responders with your exact location; Ask for Help, which contacts family and friends; and Check In, which lets contacts know your location and that you are OK. Track Progress sends preprogrammed messages, including your location and a link to Google Maps, allowing recipients to track your progress. The unit weighs just over 7 ounces and is powered by two AA batteries that provide a standby life of 12 months.
