Simrad introduced a series of compact EPIRB (Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon) units designed to fill the requirements for professional and recreational boaters alike. The EP-50, available in manual- and automatic-deployment models, is designed to rapidly alert rescue authorities of a vessel in distress. Since the units use satellites for their transmissions, rescuers can detect calls for help from anywhere in the world. The EP-50 operates using a 406 MHz distress alert with a 121.5 MHz homing beacon. It also comes with a high-powered strobe light for nighttime location. The EG-50 models are built with the same features as the EP-50s; however, they sport a built-in GPS for increased position accuracy when in the alert mode.
